The French Basque Country or Northern Basque Country is located in the western part of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department.

Pyrénées-Atlantiques is a department in the southwest of France which name comes from the Pyrenees mountains and the Atlantic Ocean.

The large beaches and the waves attract a lot of tourist in Summer . This is the main place for European surf industry. The rural and tradional interland contrasts with the Coast activity.

Bayonne ( Post I&L: Bayonne on the River Nive ) and Biarritz ( POST I&L : Biarritz ) are the main cities.

Ciboure and Saint-Jean-de-Luz are very pretty towns with many traditional basque-style houses (called Lapurdi or Labourd). The sixteenth century church of St Vincent has an octagonal tower, Basque galleries and a Baroque altarpiece.

Joseph-Maurice Ravel (March 7, 1875 – December 28, 1937) was a French composer known especially for his melodies, orchestral and instrumental textures and effects. His famous “Bolero” often called “Ravel Bolero” is his masterpiece.

Ravel was born in the Basque town of Ciboure, France, near Biarritz, only 18 kilometers from the Spanish border, in 1875

Saint-Jean-de-Luz is a fishing port on the Basque coast and now a famous resort, known for its architecture, sandy bay, the quality of the light and the cuisine. The town is located south of Biarritz, on the right bank of the river Nivelle . The port lies on the estuary just before the river joins the ocean.

Hendaye is the most South-Western town in France. The town is a popular seaside tourist resort by the Atlantic coast, the “Côte Basque”, lying at the same time on the right bank of the Bidassoa, which marks the border with Irún, Spain.
