Located on the foothill of the Southern Pyrenees and close to the Spanish border, Espelette is an authentic basque village which has preserved its traditions. Numerous monuments witness of its heritage but Espelette is above all renown thanks to sun dried fragrant Chili pepper……the pepper celebration takes place each year in October, this is the opportunity to discover all the local food produced here in the French Basque Country. I think I need to sell all, travel light, and hit the road with the heaviest thing being a camera lens and tripod. Wow! Great stuff! I love the chili peppers all over the buildings! I can smell the meat cooking and taste that fresh baked bread!

I’ve been to Espelette as my mother lives in the Basque Country so she took me there on one of my visits. It’s such a lovely village. Their dark chocolate with piment d’espelette is the best I have ever had! I was so sad when my tin ran out, which happened rather fast! I’ve also had their jelly. Sooooo good all of it!

Thank you ! The Basque are proud of their food and culture and they know how to show it ! Espelette is only a few km from the the coast and Biarritz where you can eat seafood and fish as well…there are many things to discover there in a friendly atmosphere 🙂
