Located by the Mediterranean sea shore, close to the Spanish border, there is a charming city called Collioure.
A former tiny fishermen port, renowned for its anchovies, Collioure has been a Mecca for many famous painters as André Derain or Matisse and later Picasso, Dufy.

A spectacular walk from France into Spain, discovering the magnificent contrasting landscapes along the Catalan coast. This walk combines sea and landscape, excellent even in the mild Mediterranean winter. It takes you along the Côte Vermeille, beloved by the artists Dali and Miro. The path from Banyuls to the border with Spain follows the route taken by Walter Benjamin, the German-Jewish philosopher, on 24th September 1940, and is the route followed by many Jewish refugees during World War II. From the coast to the mountains, from sea to crag, from sandy beach to shady Mediterranean forest … a diverse natural landscape full of contrast, history, with clear emerald waters and charming fishing villages, stunning views, friendly people and unique culture. Excellent photos. I have a friend who is engaged to a French man and his family comes from Collioure, it looks like a lovely village. I have just finished reading a book ‘Salt’ by Mark Kurlansky and the Collioure fishermen are mentoned for the salted fish.

I’m fairly sure I visited this place about 30 years ago. I was staying in Canet Plage and hired a bike and ended up in a beautiful little port at the foothills of the Pyrenees. Thanks for the reminder
