The Verdon Gorge, in south-eastern France (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence), is a river canyon often considered to be one of Europe’s most beautiful. It is about 25 kilometres long and up to 700 metres deep. It was formed by the Verdon River, which name means the water is green, turquoise-green colour due to the limestone. The most impressive part lies between the towns of Castellane and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, where the river has cut a ravine to a depth of 700 metres through the limestone mass. ( Read more )

This is the most beautiful cycling route across the south of France. Leave Digne, the capital of Haute Provence and start your ride across the corn and lavender fields of the plateau of Valensole, one of the most beautiful places in Haute Provence
The Verdon is one of the deepest and most spectacular Grand Canyon in Europe. The plateaux stand over 1,000 metres above sea level.
Once you are on the plateau you can practically freewheel all the way down to the nearby Mediterranean. We will reach the sea near Fréjus and Saint Raphaël and explore the best-preserved areas on the Riviera: the Maures Massif and the Estérel coast road. To finish off, we will pass through the most famous coastal towns of the French Riviera: Cannes, Juan les Pins and Antibes. ( Ici & Là Nature )

Having been there 4 times already I have yet to tire of the beautiful landscape and look forward to our (hopefully) next visit. Pack your bathing suit and towels (we always pack a picknick lunch, too), because the Lac de Sainte-Croix at the end of the canyon is worth a dip.
