Guernica, or Gernika is a town in the province of Biscay, in the Basque Country, Northern Spain.
Gernika is best known to those residing outside the Basque region as the scene of the April 26, 1937, Bombing of Gernika, one of the first aerial bombings by Nazi Germany’s Luftwaffe. It inspired the painting Guernica by Pablo Picasso.
Guernica is a painting by Pablo Picasso. It was created in response to the bombing of Guernica, a Basque Country town in northern Spain by German and Italian warplanes at the behest of the Spanish Nationalist forces, on 26 April 1937, during the Spanish Civil War.
Guernica shows the tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicts upon individuals, particularly innocent civilians. This work has gained a monumental status, becoming a perpetual reminder of the tragedies of war, an anti-war symbol, and an embodiment of peace.
Imagine witnessing the aftermath of this horror
Imagine the streets scattered with dead, mutilated and wounded human bodies
Imagine the dead and wounded animals
Imagine mothers crying and hugging the bodies of their wounded and dead children
Imagine a soldier or a soldiers arm with a broken weapon in his hand.

Monument to the Martyrs of Oradour-sur-Glane by Fenosa
Oradour-sur-Glane was a village in the Limousin region of Vichy France that came under direct German control in 1942. Its name has become infamous because of its destruction in 1944 when almost all of its inhabitants — men, women, and children — were slaughtered by the German Waffen-SS.

The ruins of the original village remain as a memorial to the dead and to represent similar sites and events. Its museum includes items recovered from the burned-out buildings: watches stopped at the time their owners were burned alive, glasses melted from the intense heat, and various personal items.

Some of the most beautiful pictures I’ve seen of Guernika. My grandparents luckily immigrated to the United States before their city was bombed.

Utterly brilliant. I spent a lot of time looking at the Guernica and Picasso’s studies for it at The Prado. It’s wonderful how you put that masterpiece into context. Your post brought tears to my eyes. I came to appreciate the painting at new levels and it’s wonderful to see how peace has come to replace war in this town. Well done!
