This castle called “La Brede Castle” is located in the city of the same name in Southwestern France around Bordeaux.
Montesquieu, the famous 17th c.writer and philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment was born there in 1689 and wrote the major part of his work here.
First built in the 14th c, it is originally a gothic-style fortified castle, surrounded by water moats and with a defensive system.
It was owned by the same family (Montesquieu’s one) between the 10th century and 2004. It is classified as a Historic Monument since 1951.
