The foundation of the city dates back to the 12th century, created by the King of Navarra. “Pied de Port” means the city located at the foot of the Pass (“Port” means Pass). The Pass is the famous Roncesvalles Pass where the Pyrenees can be crossed and a highplace of pilgrimage towards Compostela.
