A Bordeaux wine is any wine produced in the Bordeaux area. The total vineyard area stretches over 120,000 hectares, making it the largest wine growing area in France.

 The region occupies the left bank of the Gironde estuary from the mouth of the river to the city of Bordeaux and includes the four famous communes of St-Estephe, Pauillac, St. Julien and Margaux. It is 60 km long from north to south, and about 10 km wide. The production estimation is about 50 million litres per year of red wine.

The 1855 classification system was made on request of Emperor Napoleon III for the  Universal Exhibition of Paris. This came to be known as the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. This classification ranks the wines into five categories according to their prices. The first Crus of red wines (four from Médoc and one, Château Haut-Brion, from Graves), are among the most expensive wines in the world.
