The desire for peace is stronger than ever before. Yet all hopes that people would learn from the terrors of war keep getting disappointed. The atrocities of war seem to fade. War graves are one of the few places where history is made visible. They truly are memorials of millionfold suffering. War graves memoriels cannot prevent war, but they make us think twice. And when we stand at these crosses, we know that is from here that the best reminder of peace is radiated. ( VDK )

War, violence and violation of human rights influence our lives even in the new millenium.Every day the news air terrible pictures into our living rooms.Conflicts and dreadful battles are everywhere. The personnalities of the people who lose their lives disappear completely behind the statistics. The road to solve these conflicts in a peaceful way seems too rocky. Reaching for a weapon has become too easy. At the same time, people’s longing for peace is as strong as ever. ( VDK )

And it still continues. Like Tolstoi said it begins first in our hearts – perhaps we can still learn that we can be peaceful.

Thank you for showing the German cemetery. We tend to only think of the Allies, but the German people suffered greatly too, just for following orders. They were young men, sons, fathers and brothers and they were loved by their mothers, children and sisters and were mourned just as much as the other side. The numbers are mind blowing and there is no end in sight. Wonderful post

Over-whelming…. It is difficult to reconcile the mentality that lead to such waste of human life, culture.
