Church of the Crucifix, Puente la Reina.
From the Medieval fortified city of St Jean Pied de Port in French Basque Country and capital of Low Navarra, to Logrono, capital of La Rioja. The first stage is tough as it crosses North to South the Pyrenees by Roncevaux, then walking down towards Pamplona is breathtaking, both soft and steep. Wheatfields, olive trees and fruit trees orchards slowly change into vineyards as approaching Logrono. This program is an immersion into Spanish atmosphere and from Puente La Reina where the historic Camino Frances starts, you will certainly meet other pilgrims and learn History thanks to the rich heritage along the way of churches, monasteries, palaces. These are truly beautiful photos! Thanks for sharing. In case I never make it over to France and Spain, at least I have a sense of what the light and architecture look like.

It was interesting to discover that there are several “Way of St. James” routes – the one you took from France is very well-known; this may be the very popular one which also passes through Burgos? There is a route from Southern Spain which passes through Caceras and Salamanca – you can see the trademark scallop-shell symbols embedded in the medieval streets of both these cities.
thanks for following my blog which currently features my adventures in Spain.

Hello ! Thanks for your comment !
There are many different routes in France. The route coming from the South of Spain is called Via Plata. If you want to know more, read the article on my blog :

Stunning! What camera and lens took the images? (I want what you have.) The precision of each image makes for calendar-perfect. I do not mean that as an insult. Color saturation and sharpness were precise. Did you manipulate the color? I’m curious and impressed.

This is eerie, and perfect timing. I was thinking of doing the Way of St. James next year to celebrate my 60th birthday, and this past weekend I was on a retreat with a guy whose daughter had hiked it twice. So now you begin to follow my blog, I suppose my decision is made. I love your pictures, they are so enticing. You have me hooked. Thank you.

Lovely photos and clearly listed for viewing. The statue of Christ with the shepherd’s crook is wonderful and best I’ve ever seen. Of course I LOVE scuplture. Thanks for reading my blogs. Hope you are not disappointed. The day before the earth was hit I put up an inner feeling about it. I worked as an Architectural Secretary but retired (ill-health) so thank you for my free tour of the buildings. France is my favourite country and a few I played with moved there when they married years ago. One day perhaps!

These photos are stunning and remind me so much of my time in France. Thank you for posting. Please consider changing your startling green source label. I understand you don’t want others to take your photos, but the green label is very distracting. Your photos are so beautiful they deserve to capture more of the attention.

Oh my goodness: I recognise some of these places from your excellent photos. I hope, when in the Rioja region, you tried some of the outstanding wines and excellent food! We stayed in Haro and used Haro as a base to walk along part of the Camino de Santiago. I am glad you like “In search of unusual destinations”, by the way. Phil.
